How Solar Power is Helping Create Carbon Free Homes

Not everyone is interested in building their own home from the ground up, but could renovation be a more tempting idea?

You could transform your draughty old and unefficient home into a modern energy efficient and environmentally friendly one. You'd be doing your bit to save the environment, all whist saving yourself some money!

According to the UK Green Building Council, more than one home a minute needs to be refurbished in Britain by 2050 to meet the insulation standards required to cut emissions by 80% - which successive governments have aimed for.

Fortunately, solar panels are extremely flexible, and a domestic photovoltaic system can easily be fitted to almost any home, and provide almost instant savings. In fact, solar energy can save the average household up to £65 a year on their electricty bills. Once installed there is very little maintenance required, so the positives massively outwiegh the negatives.

The main issue with solar panels, and renewable energy in general, has always been that the energy can't be stored, it has to be used when it's generated. For this reason, solar panels were only ever used as an alternative to conventional power during the day, and were obsolete at night or in low light conditions.

Over the last few years this has changed. Thanks to companies like Tesla, photovoltaic battery storage systems have improved dramatically. You can now use any surplus electricity generated by your solar panels during the day, and use it during peak times, or to supply your home at night when the solar panels are no longer generating electricity. This allows you to cut your houselhold energy bills evern further, and become less reliant on conventional forms of energy to heat your water and your home.

The next step is to creating your carbon free home is to think about preventing heat loss. This will dramatically reduce carbon emissions from autumn onwards and will have the double benefit of further saving you money on your heating bills.
