The UK's Greenest Summer on Record

Accoriding to the National Grid, this summer saw more than half of the UK's energy production come from low carbon sources, making it the UK's greenest summer on record! Between June 21st and September 22nd, the carbon intensity of the grid, which is measured in grammes of CO2 emiited per KWh of power generated, was less than half than it had been during the same period four years ago.

The announcement of this record has come at an ideal time for the renewable energy sector, as the first ever subsidy-free large scale commercial solar power project has opened in the UK. The 10 megawatt Clayhill solar farm will generate enough electricity to supply more than 2,500 homes. In addition to the solar panels, Clayhill solar farm has its own battery storage units, five in total, which allow it to store the electricity it produces and feed it into the grid as and when it's needed.

This reduction in carbon emissions has been made possible by a combination of solar, wind and nuclear power.  An increasing number of wind and solar power farms have helped to transfrom the renewable energy sector in the UK. The fundamental shift has been the continuing growth of off-shore solar and wind projects. This shift marks the most natable change that has happened over the last few years, energy from renewable green sources has gone from being a small part of the UK's energy sources, to supplying a significant chunk of it.

In other news, the National Grid announced the launch of their new software which is able to forcast the carbon intensity of electricity up to two days ahead. It's hoped that this will help us to further understand and control the way we use our energy. Making small changes in our day to day lives, such as when we use our household appliances or when we charge our electric cars, could help to releive some pressure on the National Grid. This could help to reduce our dependence on back-up fossil fuels in further, and is yet another important step towards a sustainable future!
