What Could I Save with Ground Source Heat Pumps?
So, how much could you save on your energy bills by installing a geothermal renwable heat system? That depends on a few factors, from what system you currently have in place to how you plan to heat your home using the energy from the GSHP system you install.
What system you currently have
If you have an old heating system, it's likely to be very inefficient. So, replacing it with a new heat pump system will almost certainly lower your running costs. Even modern Gas and Oil systems aren't as efficient as a GSHP system, which uses thermal energy from the Earth to heat your home at a fraction of the cost of conventional heating technologies.
How you plan on heating your home
The Ground Source Heat Pump will help you save money on your bills, but how much you save has as much to do with how that heat is ditributed as it does with the heat pump itself.
Underfloor heating is the ideal solution, and it will help you to maximise the savings of the GSHP system. If you're unable to fit an Underfloor Heating system, you should aim to install the largest radiators you can. Ground Source Heat Pumps produce heat with a very high level of efficiency, but they aren't able to reach the maximum temperatures of a Conventional or Biomass Boiler. For this reason they need a more effective means of ditribution and often need to be on for longer periods of time.
Renewable Heat Incentice Income
In 2014, the UK government introduced a new scheme that provided financial incentives to encourage people to adopt new renewable energy technologies, such as Ground Source Heat Pump systems.
If you're interested in finding out how much income you could be entitled to through the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme, you can use the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy's online RHI Payment Calculator.
